Quality of Service for Mission Critical Communication
When planning and designing the structure of a LTE network, the concept of Quality of Service (QoS) has become an important part of the job.
In order for a Network to be able to prioritise and organise traffic, there is a need to put in place a set of rules to mechanically control data packets and organise them.
What is quality of service?
Quality of Service is the measurement of the overall performance of a network. In this measurement, elements such:
- Bandwidth
- Delay
- Loss and
- Jitter
are analysed.
How is this quality guaranteed?
QoS is assured putting in place a set of protocols via technologies/ rules which work without interruption to support the Network ability to run in a reliable manner and guarantee that high-priority applications and traffic can run without disruption even when the network is reaching its maximum capacity.
The rules assign different priorities to each network traffic flow. As a result, the different packets of traffic have a specific order of handling and according of their priority, they have a larger or smaller bandwidth.
What does it mean? It means that, not only LTE QoS assigns properties to data & voice services but also it defines the priorities for certain customers over others.
For instance, in case of congestion, the communication of users with higher priority, for example the communication of emergency services can still flow uninterrupted while standard users might find difficult to access the network.
